ACIM Text Chapter 16 Section IV -“The Illusion and Reality of Love” and Section V “The Choice for Completion”

This audio on special love and special hate (a.k.a. ego’s attachment and aversion, attractions and repulsions, “lambscape” and “goatscape,” features CA Brooks and Bruce Rawles talking – on another segment of her bi-weekly ACIM internet radio program on 12Radio – about  Text Chapter 16 (The Forgiveness of Illusions) Section IV -“The Illusion and Reality of Love” and Section V “The Choice for Completion” from A Course in Miracles. The first paragraph of section IV begins with this deep dive into the maladaptive workings of our insane, magical, biased thinking we call ego:

“Be not afraid to look upon the special hate relationship, for freedom lies in looking at it. It would be impossible not to know the meaning of love, except for this. For the special love relationship, in which the meaning of love is hidden, is undertaken solely to offset the hate, but not to let it go. Your salvation will rise clearly before your open eyes as you look on this. You cannot limit hate. The special love relationship will not offset it, but will merely drive it underground and out of sight. It is essential to bring it into sight, and to make no attempt to hide it. For it is the attempt to balance hate with love that makes love meaningless to you. The extent of the split that lies in this you do not realize. And until you do the split will remain unrecognized, and therefore unhealed.” – T-16.IV

Special love/hate insanity – as ACIM might define them – is the seemingly separate self’s unsatisfying strategy for seeking dream allies – and enemies … solely on the basis of whether or not they meet the unconscious, angry demands of ‘what in it for me’ (WIIFM) thinking, the only two realms of thought that ego can relate to, being made from the thought of duality and separate interests.

“Every moment is an opportunity to look at our minds.”

We also touched on “The Real Alternative” in Chapter 31 which ties in to a prior conversation on that subject here.

Double Shield of Oblivion revisited: CA Brooks and Bruce Rawles on ACIM Workbook Lesson 136

GIST and the double-shield of oblivionThis audio features CA Brooks and Bruce Rawles talking – on another segment of her bi-weekly ACIM internet radio program on 12Radio – about a Course concept called “the Double Shield of Oblivion” that appears in the middle of the 5th paragraph of Workbook Lesson 136 of A Course in Miracles (boldface added where this idea is introduced):

“It is this quick forgetting of the part you play in making your “reality” that makes defenses seem to be beyond your own control. But what you have forgot can be remembered, given willingness to reconsider the decision which is doubly shielded by oblivion. Your not remembering is but the sign that this decision still remains in force, as far as your desires are concerned. Mistake not this for fact. Defenses must make facts unrecognizable. They aim at doing this, and it is this they do.”

We’re encouraged in ACIM’s curriculum to look at ego’s two defensive shields – the outer shield being the material world of space, time, bodies and all the ‘stuff’ we all seem to be endlessly busy contending with … and the inner shield being the unconscious, yet unfounded fugitive thought system of sin, guilt, fear, victimhood, death and all aspects of insanity that aim at keeping us mindless. We turn around ego’s double defenses by using our bodily experiences with a completely different purpose from ego’s maladaptive intent: we begin to notice – without condemnation – that those experiences are reflections of our interior mental states. This breaches ego’s outer defense shield, the one we swore (to this insane self-concept) we would never do, triggering full alert status when we begin to examine our thoughts objectively, and with kind compassion. Seen through the eyes of our Inner Kindness Teacher (a.k.a. Holy Spirit) we realize that this inner shield of oblivion, protected by ego’s “pay no attention to the unfounded thoughts behind that curtain” mantras, cannot withstand the ultimate appeal of perfect, unchanging peace of Oneness that lies beyond our investment in indivi-Duality.

We also read an excerpt from two consecutive sections in Kenneth Wapnick‘s brilliant work “The Journey Home: The Obstacles to Peace in A Course in Miracles“, pages 13-18, where he explains the double shield of oblivion in more detail. Here is another audio about the Double Shield of Oblivion and yet another older conversation with CA Brooks.

Nothing to fear in Truth: CA Brooks and Bruce Rawles on ACIM’s Workbook Lesson 48

This audio features CA Brooks and Bruce Rawles talking – on another segment of her bi-weekly ACIM internet radio program on 12Radio – about  that appears in Part II of the Workbook of A Course in Miracles which precedes Workbook Lesson 48, which reminds us that in truth, there is nothing to fear. We catch up on ‘dream news’ and return to the ongoing mindful examination of the “alternative reality”  thought system of fear – and the unsavory results that this shabby substitute for Perfect Peace proffers – and the thought system of unchanging love that motivates our continued investment in shared interests and trusting the Teacher of Kindness we all share.

CA Brooks - 12Radio

There is nothing to fear.

The idea for today simply states a fact. It is not a fact to those who believe in illusions, but illusions are not facts. In truth there is nothing to fear. It is very easy to recognize this. But it is very difficult to recognize it for those who want illusions to be true.

Today’s practice periods will be very short, very simple and very frequent. Merely repeat the idea as often as possible. You can use it with your eyes open at any time and in any situation. It is strongly recommended, however, that you take a minute or so whenever possible to close your eyes and repeat the idea slowly to yourself several times. It is particularly important that you use the idea immediately, should anything disturb your peace of mind.

The presence of fear is a sure sign that you are trusting in your own strength. The awareness that there is nothing to fear shows that somewhere in your mind, though not necessarily in a place you recognize as yet, you have remembered God, and let His strength take the place of your weakness. The instant you are willing to do this there is indeed nothing to fear. – W-pI.48

What is Sin? CA Brooks and Bruce Rawles muse on more of ACIM WB, Part II

This audio features CA Brooks and Bruce Rawles talking – on another segment of her weekly ACIM internet radio program on 12Radio – about the fourth essay “What is Sin”  that appears in Part II of the Workbook of A Course in Miracles which precedes Workbook Lesson 251. This simple, yet profound summary distills how ego’s misinterpretation (of everything and everyone) makes all that seemed to happen in this dream of a world we take far too seriously appear irreconcilable, foisting the propaganda that attempts to justify sin’s companion mind thugs: guilt and fear. Our Inner Kindness Teacher, a.k.a. Holy Spirit, however, merely looks on ego’s quaintly perverse notion of sin as silly, forgivable and of no eternal consequence, letting everyone (including me and you) and everything ‘off the hook’ for a cosmic crime that was impossible to commit. The conversation also touched on a related section in ACIM’s text, Sin versus Error.

CA Brooks - 12Radio

What Is Sin?

1. Sin is insanity. It is the means by which the mind is driven mad, and seeks to let illusions take the place of truth. And being mad, it sees illusions where the truth should be, and where it really is. Sin gave the body eyes, for what is there the sinless would behold? What need have they of sights or sounds or touch? What would they hear or reach to grasp? What would they sense at all? To sense is not to know. And truth can be but filled with knowledge, and with nothing else.

2. The body is the instrument the mind made in its efforts to deceive itself. Its purpose is to strive. Yet can the goal of striving change. And now the body serves a different aim for striving. What it seeks for now is chosen by the aim the mind has taken as replacement for the goal of self-deception. Truth can be its aim as well as lies. The senses then will seek instead for witnesses to what is true.

3. Sin is the home of all illusions, which but stand for things imagined, issuing from thoughts that are untrue. They are the “proof” that what has no reality is real. Sin “proves” God’s Son is evil; timelessness must have an end; eternal life must die. And God Himself has lost the Son He loves, with but corruption to complete Himself, His Will forever overcome by death, love slain by hate, and peace to be no more.

4. A madman’s dreams are frightening, and sin appears indeed to terrify. And yet what sin perceives is but a childish game. The Son of God may play he has become a body, prey to evil and to guilt, with but a little life that ends in death. But all the while his Father shines on him, and loves him with an everlasting Love which his pretenses cannot change at all.

5. How long, O Son of God, will you maintain the game of sin? Shall we not put away these sharp-edged children’s toys? How soon will you be ready to come home? Perhaps today? There is no sin. Creation is unchanged. Would you still hold return to Heaven back? How long, O holy Son of God, how long?

What is Forgiveness? CA Brooks and Bruce Rawles on Part II of ACIM’s Workbook

This audio features CA Brooks and Bruce Rawles talking – on another segment of her weekly ACIM internet radio program on 12Radio – about the first essential essay “What is Forgiveness”  that appears in Part II of the Workbook of A Course in Miracles. This 1-page masterpiece redefines and corrects our world’s ‘forgiveness to destroy’ misconceptions and replaces it with a forgiveness that includes all and transcends divisive agendas.

CA Brooks - 12Radio

“Forgiveness recognizes what you thought your brother did to you has not occurred. It does not pardon sins and make them real. It sees there was no sin. And in that view are all your sins forgiven. What is sin, except a false idea about God’s Son? Forgiveness merely sees its falsity, and therefore lets it go. What then is free to take its place is now the Will of God.

An unforgiving thought is one which makes a judgment that it will not raise to doubt, although it is not true. The mind is closed, and will not be released. The thought protects projection, tightening its chains, so that distortions are more veiled and more obscure; less easily accessible to doubt, and further kept from reason. What can come between a fixed projection and the aim that it has chosen as its wanted goal?

An unforgiving thought does many things. In frantic action it pursues its goal, twisting and overturning what it sees as interfering with its chosen path. Distortion is its purpose, and the means by which it would accomplish it as well. It sets about its furious attempts to smash reality, without concern for anything that would appear to pose a contradiction to its point of view.

Forgiveness, on the other hand, is still, and quietly does nothing. It offends no aspect of reality, nor seeks to twist it to appearances it likes. It merely looks, and waits, and judges not. He who would not forgive must judge, for he must justify his failure to forgive. But he who would forgive himself must learn to welcome truth exactly as it is.

Do nothing, then, and let forgiveness show you what to do, through Him Who is your Guide, your Savior and Protector, strong in hope, and certain of your ultimate success. He has forgiven you already, for such is His function, given Him by God. Now must you share His function, and forgive whom He has saved, whose sinlessness He sees, and whom He honors as the Son of God.”

Workbook Lessons 190 and 195 – A conversation with CA Brooks and Bruce Rawles

Here is an audio program with CA Brooks and Bruce Rawles conversing – on another segment of her weekly ACIM internet radio program on 12Radio – about workbook lesson 190 : “I choose the joy of God instead of pain.” and workbook lesson 195: “Love is the way I walk in gratitude.” This latter lesson ties into a similar conversation from November 2015. We talked about the comfort that helps us cope with all the challenging situations in our world, both near and far, along with topics such as the metaphor of planetary retrograde motion and undoing ego by looking and saying no to the wrong perspective of pain.

Waking Dreams: Our Royal Road Forgiveness Classroom

Monty Python with Pleaides - Four YorkshiremenIn this audio programCA Brooks and Bruce Rawles talk – on another segment of her weekly ACIM internet radio program on 12Radio – about one of numerous brilliant essays by Kenneth Wapnick, Ph.D. In this one, entitled “The World As The Royal Road To Heaven” * Ken points out how ACIM extends Freud’s metaphor of using dreams as the ‘Royal Road’ to the unconscious … to our daytime as well as nighttime dreams as fair game for showing us our unresolved forgiveness lessons. We also briefly mention a classic parody on ‘victimhood one-downs-manship’ in a skit called “Four Yorkshiremen” by the Monty Python troupe.

ACIM Lessons 77-80: The Miracle of Peace

Sky-peace

Here is an audio program with CA Brooks and Bruce Rawles conversing – on another segment of her weekly ACIM internet radio program on 12Radio – about ACIM Workbook Lesson 77 “I am entitled to miracles”, Lesson 78: “Let miracles replace all grievances“, Lesson 79: “Let me recognize the problem so it can be solved“, and Lesson 80: “Let me recognize my problems have been solved.” The talk’s focus is about the recurring theme that the ‘miracles’ that ACIM refers to are about a change in the mind, rather than ego’s attempts to change the world.

Lessons 35-39: Ego’s fake fragmented holiness and our Real Inclusive Holiness

In this audio programCA Brooks and Bruce Rawles talk about our Real Holiness as presented in ACIM’s Workbook Lesson 35 through Lesson 39, plus how these ideas relate to content covered in a recent FACIM.org academy class. CA read a portion of the commentary on these workbook lessons from Kenneth Wapnick‘s brilliant Journey Through The Workbook (JTTW) which related to the subject of how our holiness has nothing to do with what we think it does.

This audio about A Course in Miracles aired on January 12, 2016 as another segment of CA’s excellent weekly ACIM internet radio program on 12Radio. We also talked about how our real (whole and holy) Self doesn’t take our dreams seriously and mentioned Bob Newhart and Mo Collins classic “Stop It” skit.
